Over the past few weeks Sitestash has purchased space in a building near our datacenter, in that space we’ve built a small network pop and datacenter. We’ve installed a 12 strand fiber optic cable between the buildings, giving us 6 pairs of fiber into that facility. Sitestash now has all web hosting servers attached to a large network storage array in the new facility, daily backups are now sent off-site the moment the backups are created.
The new storage array is also available to colocation customers wanting to have a true off-site backup solution. All that is required is a cross-connect cable from your equipment to one of our backend network switches. Port speeds up to 1Gbit are available, and as it’s on the backend network there are no bandwidth charges for data transfer.
In addition to the network storage array, Sitestash is also providing internet service to the building that equipment is in. Tenants can connect to the internet via in-building WiMax, or traditional ethernet with speeds up to 1Gbit. Office space is available in the building if you’re in the Atlanta market, please contact us if you’re interested and we’ll connect you with the leasing agent.
Happy New Year!

Sitestash has tested and confirmed support for Android devices using the new IMAP IDLE features of the k9mail app. Our web servers support instant PUSH features, resulting in much better battery life and near instant email delivery. Once installed k9mail will login to the Sitestash email server hosting your domain using IMAP and set the session to IDLE, when new mail arrives the email server “wakes up” the Android data connection to deliver the mail. This feature allows you to gain battery life by no longer requiring the phone to check for new mail every X minutes.
Testing has shown a delivery time of around 8-16 seconds under ideal conditions from the time the email hits the server till the time the phone displays a new email alert. Under less than ideal conditions (poor signal, bad coverage, etc) the delivery time for new mail was still usually under 60 seconds with an average of 45 seconds from the time the email reached the server hosting your domain.
These features are fully supported on all Sitestash hosting servers, however depending on your service provider and coverage area your results may vary slightly.

Sitestash has started to deploy Sun Microsystems Sun Fire servers for business class shared webhosting servers. Our Supermicro line well remain in service as the hardware flexibility is unbeatable, but we do expect the Sun Fire’s to take over on the business class webhosting services.
The new Sun Fire servers feature the latest in high performance hardware, all include hotswap SAS based disk drives or 10k RPM SATA in some models, built in RAID controllers, multiple built-in gigabit ethernet ports for connection to our NAS arrays and backend network, full lights out management cards for access to servers without needing physical access, redundant power supplies, and hotswap cooling fans.
These new servers will be deployed entirely on our hybrid security network, ensuring the best possible protection for your business related website.

In an effort to bring new features to our customers, Sitestash as started the testing of IP version 6 address space. This will allow Sitestash to offer full hosting service on IPv6 addresses as IPv4 address space continues to become more and more limited and hard to come by.
Deploying IPv6 is a rather complicated process, and we will be working with our providers over the next few weeks to deploy and test our first IPv6 network. As testing progresses we will make mention of it on the blog and start accepting some test users to see how it works for them. Every existing customer will be allowed a free basic hosting account on the IPv6 network for testing, and the account will remain free for as long as Sitestash is in the testing phase.
All current IPv4 address space will remain in use as is, so no one has to worry about switching servers and all that fun stuff. Sitestash will simply be making IPv6 available to any new or existing customer who chooses to host on that network.

In our last post we spoke about starting an upgrade path to new Quad Core Xeons in most of our hosting servers. Well our test server survived testingĀ without bursting into flames, so we’re now going to start deploying them in the data center.
These servers will primarily be put to use in the reseller hosting servers first, and behind that the shared hosting servers will be upgraded.
The use of the quad cores will also lead us into a new semi-dedicated reseller plan offering which we will be releasing in the next two weeks.

Due to ongoing issues with our Modernbill billing software, we have started migration to Clientexec billing software. After spending the later part of 2007 pulling our hair out over random software issues with the billing system, we finally decided to bite the bullet and move all the customer accounts into a new system. This should eliminate the random multiple billings, and provide an easier way for customers to interact with sales for new orders and upgrades.

This new email software provides a huge advantage of speed over the older IMAP delays for email “PUSHing”, the results are showing less than 5 seconds for a newly received email to “PUSH” from the server to your IMAP client. The previous software was showing “PUSH” times of 45-90 seconds for the email to be delivered to the client.
Those of you who use POP3 should also notice an improved response time when querying the server for new emails.
At this time there is no plan to upgrade the cPanel servers, as there is no compatible path of upgrade for this new email software.

Sitestash now offers colocation for your Mac Mini and Mac Mini dedicated servers for lease. With some of us at Sitestash being Mac users, we see the value in this computer as a server. We are currently offering two colocation plans and two dedicated plans. The Mac Mini colocation plans allow customers to send in a Mac Mini to be installed in our data center, and connected to the network. The Mac Mini dedicated plans allow customers to rent a Mac Mini directly from Sitestash, and also covers free hardware swaps should the system fail.
Sitestash is also offering the option to rent high capacity external hard drives, specifically the 250GB and 500GB LaCie USB/Firewire drives. This will allow both colo and dedicated Mac Minis to be of more use by adding extensive data storage.
All Mac Minis, both colo and dedicated will be connected to a remote reboot port, which allows customers to login and power cycle their Mac Mini server should it freeze or crash. In the event of a drive failure or severe OS corruption, Sitestash offers OS reloads and general technical service to get you going again. You will also receive a bandwidth graph to view the traffic usage of your Mac Mini at the network level.
If you’ve not used a Mac before or seen the virtualization software available we suggest you take a look at My First Mac and Parallels Desktop. We have Mac Mini’s running Parallels and booting several versions of Linux and even Windows XP inside of OSX, it’s proving to be a very useful tool and has great potential in a server environment.

Due to projected growth Sitestash is looking to buy it’s own datacenter or sign a long term lease on quality space. We’re looking to move into the northern side of Atlanta to allow customers better access without having to deal with downtown traffic and parking.
The map below shows our target area where we are looking for space.
