Over the past few weeks Sitestash has purchased space in a building near our datacenter, in that space we’ve built a small network pop and datacenter. We’ve installed a 12 strand fiber optic cable between the buildings, giving us 6 pairs of fiber into that facility. Sitestash now has all web hosting servers attached to a large network storage array in the new facility, daily backups are now sent off-site the moment the backups are created.

The new storage array is also available to colocation customers wanting to have a true off-site backup solution. All that is required is a cross-connect cable from your equipment to one of our backend network switches. Port speeds up to 1Gbit are available, and as it’s on the backend network there are no bandwidth charges for data transfer.

In addition to the network storage array, Sitestash is also providing internet service to the building that equipment is in. Tenants can connect to the internet via in-building WiMax, or traditional ethernet with speeds up to 1Gbit. Office space is available in the building if you’re in the Atlanta market, please contact us if you’re interested and we’ll connect you with the leasing agent.

Happy New Year!

Sitestash has tested and confirmed support for Android devices using the new IMAP IDLE features of the k9mail app. Our web servers support instant PUSH features, resulting in much better battery life and near instant email delivery. Once installed k9mail will login to the Sitestash email server hosting your domain using IMAP and set the session to IDLE, when new mail arrives the email server “wakes up” the Android data connection to deliver the mail. This feature allows you to gain battery life by no longer requiring the phone to check for new mail every X minutes.

Testing has shown a delivery time of around 8-16 seconds under ideal conditions from the time the email hits the server till the time the phone displays a new email alert. Under less than ideal conditions (poor signal, bad coverage, etc) the delivery time for new mail was still usually under 60 seconds with an average of 45 seconds from the time the email reached the server hosting your domain.

These features are fully supported on all Sitestash hosting servers, however depending on your service provider and coverage area your results may vary slightly.

In an effort to bring new features to our customers, Sitestash as started the testing of IP version 6 address space. This will allow Sitestash to offer full hosting service on IPv6 addresses as IPv4 address space continues to become more and more limited and hard to come by.

Deploying IPv6 is a rather complicated process, and we will be working with our providers over the next few weeks to deploy and test our first IPv6 network. As testing progresses we will make mention of it on the blog and start accepting some test users to see how it works for them. Every existing customer will be allowed a free basic hosting account on the IPv6 network for testing, and the account will remain free for as long as Sitestash is in the testing phase.

All current IPv4 address space will remain in use as is, so no one has to worry about switching servers and all that fun stuff. Sitestash will simply be making IPv6 available to any new or existing customer who chooses to host on that network.

Sitestash has once again updated the IMAP IDLE PUSH email service, the new upgrade is showing an almost instant response time on starting a PUSH to IMAP IDLE client email software.

It is now a matter of seconds between the time an email arrives at the server, and the time the email is pushed out to an IMAP IDLE client. This provides near instant email delivery to normal desktop client software, and in most cases less than 5 second deliveries to supported PDA’s and Smartphones.

This upgrade will also benefit Smartphone battery life, as the time required to deliver an email and return to an IDLE state is even faster than the last email service version.
